Chronic Stable Angina

E.H. is a 45-year-old African American man who recently moved to the community from another state. He requests renewal of a prescription for a calcium channel blocker, prescribed by a physician in the former state. He is unemployed and lives with a woman, their son, and the woman’s 2 children. His past medical history is remarkable for asthma and six “heart attacks” that he claims occurred because of a 25-year history of drug use (primarily cocaine). He states that he used drugs as recently as 2 weeks ago. He does not have any prior medical records with him. He claims that he has been having occasional periods of chest pain. He is unable to report the duration or pattern of the pain. Before proceeding, explore the following questions: What further information would you need to diagnose angina (substantiate your answer)? What is the connection between cocaine use and angina? Identify at least three tests that you would order to diagnose angina.

Diagnosis: Angina

1. List specific goals of treatment for E.H.

2. What dietary and lifestyle changes should be recommended for this patient?

3. What drug therapy would you prescribe for E.H. and why?

4. How would you monitor for success in E.H.?

5. Describe one or two drug–drug or drug–food interactions for the selected agent.

6. List one or two adverse reactions for the selected agent that would cause you to change therapy.

7. What would be the choice for the second-line therapy?

8. Discuss specific patient education based on the prescribed first-line therapy.

9. What over-the-counter and/or alternative medications would be appropriate for E.H.?

Part 2:

You must make a presentation of the teaching plan following the 8 requirements.

The selected topic is: Telephone and Online Crisis Counseling

You can base the treaching plan on the information in File 1 (Syllabus).

Your role is as an educator

Your teaching plan should serve as a road map of what you think students need to learn as well as how you will effectively deliver your instruction and evaluate what the students learned during the class period.

While there are many formats for a teaching plan, the following sections should be included in your plan:

1.The subject or topic that you plan to teach: Your topic should be selected from one of the class periods listed in your syllabus that you developed for an undergraduate nursing course. Telephone and Online Crisis Counseling

2. Level of instruction: The placement of the course in the nursing program curriculum (i.e., freshman, junior, sophomore, senior; beginning, mid-program, or end-of-program level)

3. Method/mode of delivering your teaching presentation: Form of audio-visual delivery, PowerPoint presentation, or similar method

4. Learning objectives: Include 4–5 outcome statements that define what you expect the students to learn or accomplish by the end of the class period. Your learning objectives should be clear and measurable, and appropriate to the information you are teaching, and the level of instruction.

5. Content outline: Develop an outline of the central points and/or skills you plan to cover. Your content should be logically structured.

6. Teaching strategies and learning activities: List the approach, techniques, and methods you will use to drive your instruction and engage your students to reach the learning objectives (e.g., lecture, active learning, discussions). Provide a rationale supporting your selected teaching strategies, as well as their advantages and disadvantages.

7. Plans for individual learning differences: How you plan to adapt your teaching to meet individual learning needs of various students. Explain how individuals with different learning styles will be supported by your teaching strategies and activities.

8. Evaluation process: List the methods you plan to use to assess student learning and evaluate the effectiveness of your teaching strategies (how you will determine if students met the outcome objectives).

  • Include formative (questioning, discussion, games, etc.) and summative (assignment, test, presentation, etc.) evaluation strategies.
  • Include at least one written assignment and develop a rubric that clearly describes your expectations for the assignment. Your rubric should:
    • List the criteria that will be assessed (a breakdown of the assignment parts).
    • Include some type of scale that measures the levels of quality for the criteria being assessed (e.g., from excellent to poor, from exceeds expectations to does not meet expectations).
