Discuss how each scientist (Bill Nye and Dr. Fauci) incorporated Ethos, logos, and
Pathos into their respective videos.
Bill nye, better known as the Science Guy, is an online Tiktok sensation and
personality who tries to persuade his viewers on the importance of wearing a mask to
help stop the spread of the Covid 19 Virus. His main argument is based on the fact that
people need to protect themselves by wearing a mask at all times to stop the spread of
respiratory particles which may be carried within the host of an infected person from
directly transferring and spreading into the respiratory system of someone who is not
infected (Dacey, 2020). As a scientist, Nye conducts a series of experiments to show
his audience how the different types of masks ranging from a scarf, surgical and cloth
masks, work. He intends to create awareness in the audience and to be able to persuade
them to wear a mask and stay safe. He persuades his audience by using the three main
rhetoric modes of persuasion: Lagos, Pathos, and Ethos.
In viewing the video, I immediately established the use of Logos as a mode of
persuasion. This is because Bill nye is a science guy and thus thrives in giving out his
arguments based on well-reasoned logic. This is evident through experimentation
which helps in giving factual evidence of the validity and credibility of his arguments.
